Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes and Yams

People often think of sweet potatoes and yams as the same kind of food. They look similar but are not even genuinely related.  In fact, yams are not even potatoes at all.  Also, each vegetable has a significant difference in their nutritional value. Even though both vegetables are good for your health, the sweet potatoes still have more vitamins and nutrients in them. People seem to like the taste of yams more than they do sweet potatoes, although true yams are harder to find in U.S. markets.  Yams are much sweeter than the sweet potato, but sweet potatoes have more fiber.  One cup of sweet potatoes will give you almost 7 grams of fiber, whereas one cup of yams gives you a little more than 5 grams of fiber.  Try mixing your yams with your sweet potatoes, so that you can get the extra fiber which is rich in them.

Nutritionists recommend the average person gets between 25-35 grams of fiber per day. Fiber is what helps your body digest sweetpotatoes_yams_vegetablesfood properly. If you don’t get enough fiber then you could develop symptoms of constipation or even develop a series of hemorrhoids. So, make sure you get sweet potatoes and yam in your diet because you will feel much better in the end.

Fiber is just one health benefit though. Sweet potatoes and yams also have a lot of potassium in them, which is what helps keep your heart healthy and your muscles functioning properly. Sweet potatoes and yams are considered antioxidants because the nutrients in these foods help protect the cells in your body from getting damaged by free radicals. You’ll also get Vitamin A, which keeps your bones, eyes, skin and teeth healthy as well. Now if you are worried about finding a food that keeps your immune system strong, then look no further because yams and sweet potatoes contain lots of iron and Vitamin C.  These two nutrients not only strengthen your immune system, but they can also help prevent birth defects in pregnant women.

If you are the kind of person that gets picky about the taste of their foods, then you could add a little bit of olive oil or lime juice into the mix. Maybe even add some green peppers or hot peppers as well. Just make sure you stick to healthy natural ingredients as often as possible when you mix other foods with sweet potatoes and yams.

So, this holiday season, the next time you’re in the supermarket be sure to get plenty sweet potatoes and yams.  Broken Arrow Family Drug suggests you always consult with your physician before beginning any health or wellness program.  If you thought this article was helpful, please leave a comment and share it with your friends and family.  Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
