    Vitamin D has several important functions. Perhaps the most vital role of Vitamin D is regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorous, and facilitating normal immune system function. Vitamin D is necessary for normal growth and development of bones and teeth. If your body doesn’t get enough vitamin D, you’re at risk of developing Osteoporosis. Recent medical studies also say that people with low Vitamin D levels are more likely to die from Cancer or Heart Disease. Low levels can also indicate that you are living a generally unhealthy lifestyle.

    Even if you spend time outdoors, you may be at risk for Vitamin D deficiency. This is because of many factors. If you spend a lot of time indoors (as many of us do), or work in a downtown area where buildings block sunlight, this contributes. You can also become deficient by doing the right thing – wearing sunblock in the sun. Because these factors contribute to Vitamin D deficiency, it’s important to look into supplements and to eat foods that are naturally high in Vitamin D, such Salmon, Shrimp and egg yolks. If you don’t enjoy seafood, you can always look for milk and yogurt products labeled “Fortified.”

    If you are over the age of fifty, the National Institute of Health has determined that you need more Vitamin D than younger people.
